Why do people add random people on Facebook?

I have like 60ish friends on facebook, but I see everyone else has 500-1500 friends on Facebook. I ask them who are those people an they are like "I don't know". why do they do that, then they laugh at the amount of friends on Facebook I have. Why do people add random people on Facebook?

it seems like everyone is like that on Facebook today. As long as you feel comfortable, that's fine. But for me, it seems that the people that are like that on my friends list do it for popularity.

Usually its because they want as many friends as possible. Its like they have this contest on who can get the most friends on facebook. K don't beg ot either
