My friend can view any Facebook profile - how is this possible?

Somehow my friend has been able to view any facebook profile for a while, even if their not his friend, and no matter what their profile status is.

I know this shouldn't happen. My friend isn't a computer expert, or a hacker, or anything along those lines. For some reason at one point it just started letting him view any profile. It also seems to be just anyone, as in not just friends of friends, he can also search a random name, find someone who he hasn't got any friends in common with and still view their profile.
