How do I rid myself of unwanted Facebook friends?

U know, some who I have mutual friends with and cannot directly remove them, but cannot have them either. Facebook is to an extent personal space for me and I have to think many times before I put info that I dont want to share with these 'so-called' friends.

How do I rid myself of them and still not hurt them (

*Accidentally* block and delete them and if they bring it up say you don't know what happened and your facebook is messed up.
