Hi Teodora, I used to have a few thousand followers until I recently started a new account - now only around 600 but growing... Since there are so many ways to grow your following I'll just mention a few here but for more ideas there's an excellent ebook available - see my profile for the link. You probably already know about YouLikeHits which is free and allows you to grow your following rapidly but you won't have targetted followers who are interested in your tweets. Firstly you need to be posting tweets which are useful and interesting to a lot of people - not just to yourself! If you can get RT'd a lot that will expose you to a new audience of potential followers, as will using the #hashtag so people searching for a particular topic can find your tweets. Find other people tweeting about similar things to you and start conversations with them. It might also help if you gave away something, eg a free ebook, to people who follow you - advertise this in your tweets and bio and send a download link automatically via DM when people follow using SocialOomph.com which is free. Hope these ideas prove useful

Do your own shoutouts
Tweet interesting/funny things
Try and tweet regularly
Tweet about the trends
Put in your bio that you follow back, and follow everyone back
Do not have your icon as an egg! You must change it to yourself, people hardly ever follow eggs!

I was once in the same situation as you. I simply wanted to get thousands of followers. Then I started research the topic on how to get them, and I got lots of different Ideas. The simple ones are changing hashtag to #teamfollowback on your bio. Another Idea that works all the time, is to simply search #teamfollowback and follow a bunch of the people that come up. You are guaranteed to get a bunch that way. Then you can use manageflitter to remove the people you follow fast. (instead of unfollowing one after another) Simply rinse and repeat!

However, there is also a lazy man's way of doing it. It's called FollowrPro. Basically, its a website that has a huge database of twitter accounts (mostly actives ones) that follow you when you submit an offer.
