How do Facebook apps (games) effect computer performance?
I was recently speaking to someone that while not in the computer field, is quite intelligent, and he was telling me that games like Mafia Wars, Farmville, etc, slow down computer performance and overload memory. He said that if I must have them, I should shut down my desktop regularly instead of leaving it on as I regularly do. I am having low memory problems, and slow comp performance, can anyone out there who actually knows these things explain further and tell me what I should do?Thanks a million!

I don't think it's really a big deal, unless you have a really slow computer. Even then, it's recommended that you clear your web browser's cache if you play a lot of these flash games, since they slow down and cause your computer to work harder to run them.

If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can do this by going to Tools > Clear Recent History > Check 'Cache' and then click OK.

Not entirely true.

Yes as your computer goes through some wear and tear of course it's going to slow down.

As for those particular applications, unfortunately, yes they do slow down you computer, most of zyanga's games a full of memory leaks.

However, this issue is mainly with Zyanga's flash based games, so as far as I can tell, mafia wars will not slow your computer down, and neither will facebook applications such as, http://apps.facebook.com/pewpewbangbang that do not use flash, java, or any additional memory allocation techniques.

However, rather than restarting your computer, simply close your browser every once in a while, and use the control panel (alt+ctr+del) to make sure your browser fully closes when you are restarting it, because browsers like firefox have trouble dealing with memory leaks, and often will not close when there is a bad memory leak.
