My manager added me on Facebook. Plz read the details?
I'm a college student and recently got hired at an Italian restaurant. It's a family owned business and the manager's parents are running it. Everyone is treated like a family member and the work environment is great. The manager is only a few years older than me and he's nice. He's like that good friend at work rather than a supervisor. And finally he added me on facebook and it got me thinking. Maybe I'm getting too close? What do you think? Im usually careful about what to put on facebook though but the new timeline feature lets you look at everything that has been posted since the day the account was activated..

I always have my personal life separate from my job. I can't see any good coming from this, especially since he is your supervisor/manager and his parents are the ones who run the business.
Even if you guys are friends at work, he is still your supervisor in the end. You wouldn't want to lose your job over something silly you posted on Facebook that ended up offending him or his parents.

Also, I have never had a supervisor try to add me on Facebook. Normally there is an invisible set of boundaries that a supervisor/manager has with people s/he is working with.

Edit: I returned to this question, to see how others responded, and I agree with what the poster below me said about my response. I am old-fashioned, and I know it.
I would just rather have my Facebook and be able to post what I want, instead of having to wonder and analyze every post beforehand. That would make my Facebook a bit impersonal to me.

Ignore what the above poster said. What he's saying is for your own good, but it's from a previous era. These days, there's no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to a subject like this. What it comes down to, is that once the request has been sent, you have to tread very, very carefully. It is a bad situation no matter what because there are consequences no matter which route you go.

You could accept, and have something unprofessional pop up and blah blah blah. Now, since you're working at an Italian restaurant, and it's not a professional job or anything, the odds of repercussions are very low. Still, it's a possibility of employment now. You could decline - but that signals to your manager that you're not personable, that you don't like him, or whatever. So you see, you have to take a calculated risk. In your case, I would probably accept, possibly monitoring what he can see. He probably likes you or something at any rate. Right now, it would probably hurt you more to decline than to accept and have something unprofessional pop up. That's just my analysis. It's different based on jobs.
