What is the truth behind the rumor that Facebook may soon charge a monthly fee?

I've noticed a few groups claiming Facebook may soon begin charging a monthly fee to all users. Likewise I've seen groups claiming this is a rumor. So...true of false: will Facebook begin charging monthly fee to all users?
Or will this be similar to other websites where a monthly fee is charged only to users who wish to take advantage of premium options and/or use the website without ads?
