How do you actually become friends with people on your myspace/facebook friends list?

Everyone has the people on their friends list that are only on there because you know someone that they know or you are on the same network so the question is,

How do you initiate friendships with the people you barely know on myspace or facebook?

I know what you mean, I know people who have over 700 friends!
How would you ever know them or have the time to leave comments on all their walls?

If there is someone you'd like to know better, start leaving friendly comments on their walls.
Check out their photographs and make comments.
Post photographs of things that might interest them on their page.
If you catch them online say hello and start an IM conversation.
