why does she message him? why would they still want to be 'friends'?

So i just found out that my fiance got msgs from his ex on facebook (we've been going out for 3 years)
she said she wished they could still be friends.. why do ex's say this?
when i first started going out with him, her best friend tried to add me as a facebook friend, im guessing to snoop?? then she kept contacting him wanting him to look after her dog when she goes overseas etc.
i told him that i wasnt happy with that, its not like a child, its a dog. and he stopped.
but now suddenly she msgd him asking about how hes life is going etc.
why??? and what should i do, should i tell him. i dont want to be like too overbearing or anything. but it really upsets me that he wouldnt tell me.
