signing up for facebook, someone using my email?

Originally I had a facebook, but I inactivated the account months ago because I hardly ever used it. Today I decided to to sign back up. However, when I entered my email address, they said I had already had an account with that email. The name listed was not mine. I claimed the account, but I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do. Is it possible for two people to have the same yahoo address? I'm not sure if I had been active through my email before. Also, for a few months I had gotten emails asking if I knew people. I thought they were just ads but now I'm not so sure.

no you cant use the same email to make 2 facebook accounts... make a new one takes less than 5 minute
