Can anyone think of good aspects about Facebook adverts?
I'm a PR student and have to write a paper about how controlling Facebook has become, due to its usage of our personal info in order to target us with specifical ads.
I now need to "defend" Facebook and give some explanation of why this acess to our info to target us more precisely is NOT as bad as it seems even if it is currently occuring. What good aspects of facebook ads targeting the users could I mention?Or at least anything that can help me improve Facebooks image? For example, I already defended FB saying that after all the Help Guidance area on the website tells u in advance that your information and likes etc will be used to target u so its not like they are doing it behind your back. Any other ideas? cheers x

Facebook is free to its users. And yet it still needs to cover its expenses. It does this by selling advertisements. Most people ignore advertisements while online because they don't apply to them at all (or in my case so many of them are in Spanish, a language which I do not speak). By targeting advertisements to the appropriate users, they may lead to users actually discovering products that would fulfill their needs. Plus, it keeps Facebook free to its users since it can generate enough revenue to cover its expenses.

No one forces you to make a facebook account.

Targeting ads mean I'll get adverts that I might actually be interested in, instead of something dumb, like hot chicks now, or something. It also is good for those paying to advertise because they know their ads will reach those who may actually be interested (target audience) instead of just random people, and are more likely to be noticed or clicked on.

Targeting ads is not a new idea. For example, sugar cereal commercials tend to be on during kid cartoons (and toy commercials). Beer commercials run during sports games, makeup commercials during Fashion Police

Now technology just allows commercials and ads online to be more specific.
