you do not need to pay for the internet through your phone company.
if you can find an open wifi network you can connect to it and use your apps that require internet

Yes, because you need internet connection to access your contacts on AIM and all the status updates on Facebook. Do worry, I tried using Facebook without internet connection.. Doesn't work out soo good.
