a boy question: What's his deal?

I'm 14, he's 14. Let's call this guy A. A is friends with everyone in our grade. EVERYONE. If any, there's probably less than ten out of 300 8th graders that he isn't friends with. So, I'm about the only person he isn't friends with. We met in 6th grade math, when we were assigned to sit next to each other for a while. We only spoke once, when we were supposed to work together to put two polygons together into a square. He was trying it at first, but couldn't get it so I pointed to where it should go and he put it there and just said, "Oh." We've been in the same math and science class since then, but we've never spoken. A and I have been in groups together before with other people, but we never talk. We have a ton of mutual friends, but he won't talk to me and I won't talk to him. The reason I don't talk to him is because I am super shy and really only talk at school with friends before and after classes or when working in groups. I also know I'm a really unapproachable person because I am really quiet. I think I come off as snotty or something but I'm not. When we are near each other, he avoids eye contact with me and is a little awkward. Also, A sent me a friend request on Facebook a few months ago, and I accepted, but we don't speak on there either. I've made small efforts via Facebook by liking pictures he posts (not of himself) and commenting once or twice. So my question is, why is he like this around me?
Also, he has dated before, but I don't know much at all about his dating life. I don't think he's currently dating someone. I kind of have a crush on him, but I also really just want to be friends with him.

There are a few possibilities, he could like you and be really shy in that part of his life (not uncommon) or he could have no interest in you at all (I avoid eye contact and only say short sentences to people I don't like/don't want to be around) The only ways to decipher this one would be to bring in a person to psychoanalyze him or ask him. If you are unapproachable, how is he supposed to come up to you and tell you he likes you (if he does). best of luck

He probably feels awkward. I was just like you and still sort of am, but in college.
I think when you're quiet people feel like you don't like them or something. Maybe he feels weird because he wants to be your friend but he feels like since you're the ONE person he's not friends with and you don't TRY to talk to him a lot, he's insecure? I'm not sure.
I know I tend to make people feel incredibly awkward so they won't try to make conversation with me. I've learned how to cope with my quiet demeanor a little. I force myself to ask people questions. Even really stupid ones. I'll just be like, "So what's your favorite movie?" or "what class do you have next?" so they think I'm at least mildly interested in their life and seem like a more sociable person.

as a guy i have alot of friends, but the only person im not friends with is the person i have a crush on. its pretty weird. alot of guys dont want to make the first move. start by making him feel comfortable by smiling when he you guys talk. or have a convo on fb with him. if he goes on on fb it means he likes you bcz he can talk to you without being shy cause hes not physically around you. or give him signs that your intrested. at the same time dont get led on believing he likes you bcz IF he doesnt, youll have less of a fall
