To send a direct message to someone on twitter do they need to add/follow you?

Do they? If so how do u tell them to add you if u cant physically talk to them/tell them to?

writing @____ and message on ure profile doesn't send it to them?
i did add them but i says to send adirect message they need to add me which isnt possible.

i think that there is no need for them to add or follow you.there will be options for searching and adding friends in search column.

You need to be following them, and they need to be following you.
Writting the '@' sign before somebody's Twitter name means that you are sending them a message.
Whoever said it doesn't, lies ha ;P
