Why are some people on the internet so mean?

It seems like whenever I post something on a discussion board, Facebook, or similar sites, I get a lot of mean responses. The things I post aren't mean, and I'm not insulting anyone. Are they doing it because they think it's funny?

It's because they know you cant hurt them cause they're safely behind their computer screens.

They are called trolls. They aren't really mean in real life (maybe), but they feel like having fun, and being mean to people and spam forums.

Because they can say whatever the f*ck they want and be protected behind their little computers. Usually they are little 40 year old hermits/trolls living in their mothers' basement not having a life...

Most likely it's some fat kid between the ages of 15-25 trying to be a bad ass because they know if they tried it in real life they'd get their asses kicked. Don't take it personally.

It's amusing to some get a rise out of some people.

Yes, they think it's funny. Also, like others have said previous, most people will use the internet as their "safety net". They might never be so mean if they were face to face with a person, but being behind their monitor, all barriers (and morals)are down. I've received answers that had nothing to do with the question but I know these people were just simply showing off and being a person they can't be in real life. It's all a part of their entertainment.
I just ignore.

You got to have a thick skin and never take any insulting comments personally.

There are many foolish people out there who troll for fun that don't really realize that they aren't that anonymous.Confront them in real life and you will get to see the funny reactions.
