How do you know when someone rights an update thats for you (but not a direct/private message) without checking their profile? Is that the only way, or will Twitter notify you?
Ex. If I made an update like this... "hey, whats up? @name"
How do they know I made an update/messaged them?

On your Twitter home page, look at the gray area on the right hand side. There will be one link that says @yourusername (whatever your username is), right above the link that says Direct Messages. Clicking this will show up all the tweets in which you're mentioned.

Also, some Twitter phone applications, like on the iPhone, have a separate area showing your mentions as well. Otherwise, there is no way to receive notifications of mentions without checking your twitter. I believe there may be external sites that you could link to your Twitter that might help you out. If you want, I can look some up for you.
