how do you change your settings so that when people go to your profile, all they can see are your own status updates. (so that it kinda looks like a twitter profile )

You are able to do this by editing you privacy settings. What you would like to do is restrict everything, except your status, to be viewable by only yourself (or perhaps it says "no one"). You can also alter these settings by creating groups, etc. if you would like other people to see the majority of your profile, but not some aspects.

So you go to settings/account>>>>>privacy settings>>>>contact information and edit the settings there to suit what you want.

Go to your "Privacy Settings" and then, "Profile Information". After that, manage the options and save changes. Hope that helps!
