When you sign up for Twitter, you have the option to keep your Tweets public (the default account setting) or protect your Tweets. Accounts with protected Tweets require manual approval of each and every person who may view that account's Tweets. Only approved followers can view Tweets posted by protected accounts.

Public Tweets (the default setting) are visible to anyone, whether or not they have a Twitter account.
Protected Tweets may only be visible to previously approved Twitter followers.
How do I protect my Tweets?

Log in to your Twitter account.

Visit your account settings page by clicking on the person icon at the top right of the page and selecting Settings from the drop-down menu.

Scroll down to the Tweet privacy section and check the box next to Protect my tweets.
Save your changes by entering your password when prompted.

When you navigate to your home page after protecting your Tweets, you'll see a notice reminding you that your Tweets are now protected. The box shown below will be checked in your account settings.
