There is no legal way for them to read your personal emails in your personal email account or access your facebook account. It would be a breach of law.

However, legally you are using their equipment, on work time. So legally anything you do legally belongs to them.

They can use their email system to look at your emails. It is pretty straight forward and I have done this on occasion (when someone has problems with their email or computer)

No, they read your e-mails if they are sent from their computers and e-mail servers. This does not apply to your personal e-mails sent from home. However, most employers can see your facebook information, so don't post anything you don't want them to see. Here is the rule. Use your work provided things (computer, cell phone, phone) for work-related items. Get yourself your own cell phone and only send personal messages from home. Once you do that, you are good to go.

The law says they have a right to monitor everything you do at work, as long as they follow certain rules (such as telling you they monitor email at work):
http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs7-work.htm

Facebook doesn't have a lot of "privacy" anymore, as this time line shows
http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/04/facebook-timeline

Your boss or company can use software that "watches" you on Facebook:

And Twitter:

You might consider using this to check your privacy settings - it still can't prevent anything Facebook decides on the spur of the moment to make public, but it's better than nothing:

Ain't the Internet fun???

EDIT: If you're personal email is on, say Yahoo mail, and you read it at work - they can monitor you. If you get it from home using a company-provided laptop, they can monitor you. If you use your OWN computer at home (or coffee shop, or bar, or library, etc), they can't monitor you.
