How can I turn an old friend into a boyfriend?

I haven't talked to this boy in about two years, but when we did talk we were pretty good friends. I think he used to like me but im not sure. For some reason now i want to be his girlfriend. We go to different school that are not too far away from each other. Any way to start up a conversation over facebook without it being awkward? Any advice?Thanks in advance!
