If you are paying child support and win a large amount of money, does the state immediately reconfigure it?

Would the state immediately seize a portion and or reconfigure your monthly payments?

Just wondering because my ex is such a loser. The kid doesn't even live with her but with relatives. Mom does nothing but blow the support on herself and her own habits. I couldn't see her getting into a lot of money. It would be disgusting.

If the state does then you'd only get/pay part of that money for one year at most. I would like to think if your wife won a cash prize then she would share a bit of it with her own kid.

If your child does not live with mom and you pay child support, then I hope you have a court order to pay the person who is caring for your child the child support you owe.

As a matter of principle and the law, you and your wife are supposed to support your kid. It is not the legal job of anyone else nor the financial job either. I'd get those child support checks ordered by a judge to the people who are caring for your child.

If you are in arrears, they can intercept it. In some states, it can also be added to the calculations in increasing your support. In Massachusetts, the only thing that does not count is change back from a dollar when buying coffee.

For 22 years, I have volunteered my time working with divorced/single fathers dealing in family law issues, such as child support, teaching them about what the states are not telling support obligors.
