Why am I getting facebook notifications on friend's activities?

I have been getting notifications whenever some friends post pictures or update their status. I have never added any friend to the starred list. Some are actually my close friends and some are not, I just look at their profile a lot. How is this list generated and does it work both ways?

maybe because when you added them to your friends list you put them in your close friends category!!

click on their name and go to their profile
on the line with their name their should be a check mark followed by the word "friends"
click on that
there should be a star next to close friends or acquaintances etc
click whicever one has the star and u wont get em anymore

no unless they set it too (otherwise they dont even no that get notifications each time they post)
