Their purpose is to connect with friends, both old and new, keep in touch with people who live far away. They're also used for advertising, and promoting products and services. They're used to show events, arrange parties, and also for business uses to network with other people in your profession to get a potential job.

they were created so people could "meet" new friends, you know, pointless stuff like that. but really all social sites are boring. and they're boring because they're pointless and useless. also they were created so ppl could connect with their family and friends. but once again, there is no point to that because is'nt that what we have email and cell phones for?? yeah, social sites are very pointless.
