Should I contact distant relatives on facebook?
I found some distant cousins (second cousins once removed, third cousins) on FB. Should I contact them? I reunited with some long lost 1st & 2nd Cousins through the internet recently, and we met and got along and it worked out very well. I want to know more of my family, but is this too far a relation? Thanks.
Chris

I have my parents' nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces on my FaceBook as well as two distant cousins.

So I would be in favor letting you add these relatives onto your FaceBook so you can more than one testimony as to know about your family history.

Why not contact them. The worst thing that could happen would be that they didn't respond back or seem interested in keeping in contact with you. I actually am best friends with some of my 3rd cousins and have been since childhood. If your mom or dad was close with their parents at one time, they may be thrilled that you have reached out to them. 3rd cousins are not actually that far away. In my case, my dads father and his father's brother's children were friends and maintained a relationship when they grew up. That is how I got to be so close to my cousins.

That is a totally personal decision. Since the creation of face book many people seem to have used it in that manner. Since creating my account I have had numerous people contacting me telling me I am related to them. I never respond unless they provide some information that leads me to believe they are legitimate. I don;t like using face book, because there is no security or privacy and I have gotten viruses from it twice in less than a year.

I would not try to get in touch with people that I do not know even if they are related unless you really want to know more about your family tree. I always say Let sleeping doge lie.
