You will not get 4g or better battery life.
The iPhone 4S hardware only supports 4g. The battery is also a hardware issue.

When the updated iOS, you will get the turn by turn navigation, SIRI update, and passbook.

4G (LTE) uses different hardware to 3G, so in order to use 4G you need a phone with LTE hardware in it. The iPhone 5 and a number of other phones have LTE, but the iPhone 4S does not. In other words, updating to iOS 6 will not give you 4G support. There may be some negligible improvements to battery life but the battery itself is the same, so won't be dramatically improved.

What will be changed:

You will now have a panorama mode for your camera and social sharing with Photo Stream. The Maps app will be replaced with a new Maps app that has turn by turn navigation provided by TomTom, as well as a 3D mode for certain cities. Siri will have some improvements for booking restaurants and cinema tickets, as well as finding scores for football and other sports, and you will need to download YouTube from the app store as it will no longer be included as a standard app. The new YouTube will open up new features including many videos that were previously blocked.

You will also get Facebook integration for a lot of things, like being able to make status updates from the pull down notification center.

There will be some other changes, but no 4G unfortunately. You can read about some of the changes here:
