What happens to somebodies Facebook account when they die?

Nothing, it simply is not updated any more. Relatives may request the account to be closed, but they will have to supply verifiable information to have an account closed in case of a death.

Friends & family can contact Facebook to tell them & Facebook will actually put up a memorial page for them that can stay there forever & allow people to post their memories to it.

Or if the family asks, they can get Facebook to delete the account.

No, even if you died, your friend just need to inform them, and you'll still be there. Relax, you won't be needing them after that.

it stays open usually, unless a family member chooses to close it either by already knowing the person's password or by contacting facebook.
I've seen it happen though, and more often that not the person's profile is usually left open so that friends and family members can occasionally post something, telling their loved one how much they miss them, or about stuff that's happened they feel they'd like to know about...
It sounds silly, but it can help some people cope
