can child support payments be made direct to the child?
I have a son entering college and would like my monthly payments to be made directly to him and not his mother.

I see what you're trying to do, but who's going to cash the check? Who takes the money to the grocery store? Who buys the clothes? Not a kid.

My wife got $80,000 from me over five years. It put food in her belly as much as it did my daughter's. It's inevitable that the ex-wife will get the bulk of the money. Mine didn't even bother working when the money was coming in, and my daughter has learned to be lazy and expect someone else to support her.

It's how the system works.

Are you required to provide support after the age of 18? Your son is considered to be an adult legally at that age. Check your divorce decree/support agreement. You may not be responsible for any support at all, may be responsible until another date (say, high school graduation even if beyond the 18th birthday, or a 19th or 21st birthday), or may have agreed to pay toward college expenses instead or in addition to support. Unless there is an agreement in place specifically stating so, you don't have a legal obligation to support your adult child. Now morally is another question. You may want to support your son through college but, if that is elective, you get to decide how much, how often, and by what means. You may pay for room and board at college, send him money, or set conditions under which you will continue your support (perhaps requiring minimum grades or progress toward a degree). Check your written agreement and/or consult your attorney. It may be worth the cost of the consultation.

Go to child support enforcement and make an official request to modify the order for the money to go directly to the child. They are required to help either parent upon request, by federal law.

For 22 years, I have volunteered my time working with divorced/single fathers dealing in family law issues, such as child support, teaching them about what the states are not telling support obligors.
