How do I appear on Facebook chat?

I usually open two tabs on my browser (Google Chrome), one for Facebook and another one for Google. I'm always available to chat on Facebook whenever I log in and I never turn it off. So, my question is, if I close my Facebook tab and just leave the other one open, do I still appear as online on other's chatbox?

you have to be on the website and your chat turned on for you to appear online

but if you have a smartphone that is connected to facebook chat, it'll seem as you're online

No, if you want to go offline, hit the gear icon, on the bottom or the top, and hit turn off chat. I doubt you will still be online if you closed the tab, but when you get back on the chat will turn on automatically.
