no, no tradition. She just does. We are all human, and children of earth, so we are all bro and sis.

Well, we do call people who are related but not of immediate family (such as members of the same clan) our "cousins" (or "aunts and uncles" if they are older)

VERY close friends might be called "brother" or "sister". Either she has alot of "very close friends" or she is using the term very loosely, (in which case it loses some of it's meaning)
