How to keep a child from continually cussing?

Keep track of the number of times cuss words are used during the day on something visible to everyone in the house (a chart on the refrigerator or something). Give rewards for each hour/day that the number of cuss words used goes down.

Tell your friend that children learn from the masters, which probably means your friend cusses alot around her children or exposes them to movies and tv filled with cussing as well. Children will think if mommy and daddy can say it then they can to.

Maybe she should watch her own potty mouth first.

Take something away from them that they like to play with, or make them have time out every time they cuss. or both.

Well, I don't think that slapping them will help..But, I think if she keeps reminding the child that it's not a good word to say, and continually punish them by taking priviledges away but just instill in them that its a bad word and hope for the best!!!
Good lucck...

If the child is four years old I don't think he/she really knows how offensive it can be to somebody. I believe the more you try to constrict a child from something the more likely they'll want to rebel. This is tough though, because she wouldn't want them to curse in front of family, friends, or strangers! I guess she needs to make sure she doesn't curse in front of them. I don't know if she does or not. Well, she could always replace the words with something less harsh? I'm not sure, I don't have kids.

Take toys away and say it's permanent, no more dessert, intense chores...Idk that's what I'd do besides what your friend has already done...I'm only 15 so I don't REALLY know but that might help Smile

A 4 year old! Oh wow, does the father(if they have one they spend time with) encourage it? Tell her to ask the child why he cusses. He obviously is in some state of hatred (not like he is demonic) but he is obviously upset about something. I dont think four year olds swear to be 'cool.' When he says "because i want to" the she should say that 'thats not what you do when your mad, so why is are saying it? make sure she finds out why...

The best possible thing to do is to stop cussing in front of them if she does that would be the main cause of her problem if that is not the case then what I would do is slap them and explain to them that cussing is not proper to do.

1. Look for their favorite things and take them away.
2. If they still cuss, there's always the traditional spanking.
3. When that doesn't work, take them to an adult male (Dad, friend, etc.) and ask them if they can have a talk with the child about cussing.
4. If that does not work, take them to a counselor.

Hope this helps!
