There is a photo on facebook of my boyfriend and I that I love but the person who took the photo doesn't have the original any more, so when you enlarge the photo it becomes really pixalated! Is there any way of editing photos so that you can enlarge it without it becoming pixalated?

No
You need a higher resolution image to start with.

Can't you get your friend to retake the image?

No. You can have a computer enhance it and basically blend the pixelated areas based on average color, etc, but it does not work well for what you are describing.

There is a nice $150 program, called Genuine Fractals, that claims to allow up to 500% enlargement without too much pixelation.

Download the trial version and see if you want to spend the bux on a program you may only use once.

you'll need the original, and not the copy from Facebook...

pixelation comes from low res images in the net...

As is true in many things, the answer is "it depends".

Facebook typically drastically cuts down on resolution, but if a quality photo is uploaded to FB, you can still get a decent enlargement depending on some other factors:

1. Just how much do you want it enlarged. NOTHING is going to let you make a poster out of it.

2. The program used to do the enlargement makes a big difference.

3. What is the intended usage of the photo? If you only want it larger on the computer, that can usually be done quite well IF the original photo is not TOO small and poor quality. If you want the photo enlarged for a PRINT, then it becomes more difficult, as a MUCH higher resolution and quality is needed for a decent print. The larger the print desired, the more critical must be the original quality of the photo.

I have a pro enlargement program on my computer. You can send me the photo if you want and I will see what I can do with it, but you MUST tell me what your intended usage is for the photo. If you want it printed, I need to know the size print you want, ... telling you now that anything larger than a 4 x 6 inch photo will probably not be possible.

Take a look at this video. It explains everything you need to know about enlarging photos without them being pixelated.
