Yes, advertisements!
The prices range from like $2 to hundreds of dollars, and with so many businesses and such, looking for somewhere to advertise what better than a site with over 1,000,000,000 (1 billion!) registered and regular users?
Also, all the games need to pay to host on Facebook.
Every website can do what he's done, but it's just the sheer number of people who use the site which keep him paid.

Every time you just click an ad facebook gets paid.
And lot of companies use facebook to examine and understand human nature/consumer patterns etc. and facebook earns from that too. And a lot more.
