I think he has a good point, especially as YOU cannot answer his question!

Ask yourself, why do you want a facebook account so much?

Facebook (or the others) is not a necessity is it? Just how long do you spend socializing on the net rather than real life, and do you think it is a healthy amount?

Recent studies suggest it is harmful to our development spending so much time on social interactive sites!

Most younger people want to be on facebook as all their friends are, peer pressure rather than desire comes into play.

Also think, it is a large revenue generating site, NOT something for our wellbeing! Bet that aint the answer you wanted, just please think about it rather than just being a 'sheep'

Tell him that you can make your profile private, and unsearchable on Facebook, you will only give your friends the link to your profile, and only people you know and trust will see your updates. Tell him that Facebook is a social tool to communicate more effectively with your friends, especially long-distance friends or relatives to know what is going on in their lives, and it can enable you to get talking again after not speaking to them for a while. Facebook also has a inbuilt 'Chat' similar to AIM.
