What exactly is the situation with google and china?

I've read several articles via BBC and Yahoo!. However, I don't really understand the reason(s) why Google wants to "pull out of China"...Could someone kindly enlighten me?

you should know that information that we chinese can get has been censorship ed by our government. but google do not want to censorshipe the informations that it is providing again,because some imformation of GMAIL accounts related to the dissindents were stolen probably by the hackers who were supported by the chinese government.

so google pissed off.

A few months ago, Google scanned hundreds of Chinese written books and posted it online for free.
China protested, and Google apologized.

Now Google got "hacked" and says Chinese people did it. And says they will pull out of the Chinese market if China doesn't lift it's censors.

Remember, Google only has 30% market share in China. Baidu China's leading search engine is more tailored and geared toward Chinese people who don't use English to search.

It's Google's choice.

I agree with censorships. China believes the long term affects of porn, and internet is not going to be healthy for people. And I agree.

The Google situation is typical for a western company who does respect Chinese culture thus can't do Business well in China.

Google has been unable to cater to Chinese public taste and has been beaten by Baidu hands-down.

In desperation, it threatens the Chinese government and tries to draw international attention as it tries to seek a change to its failing situation in China.

I'd say Google's move is quite childish even in the eyes of a college student, the last thing a company would do is confront the government of where it works, attacking the local law system publicly, and still wish to earn money from the local people.

internet censorship is the main reason of Google's cry. there are news too that says private accounts had been attacked and intellectual properties have been hacked. yahoo and other companies are supporting Google's point. so basically, they are fighting for human rights(freedom and privacy) that have been violated by the government. facebook, youtube, twitter and myspace have been blocked too in china. as for the chinese gov't, they said they are protecting the nation's stability and controlling sites and information that might offend their laws or guidelines or the like.
