Well the surface area is the area of all the faces added together.
This particular shape is a rectangular prism.
SO the surface area= area top rectangle X 2 +area side square x2 + area side rectangle x2
top rectnagle=b x a
= 56
square= a x c
= 28
side rectangle=b x c
= 98
surface area= area top rectangle X 2 +area side square x2 + area side rectangle x2
= (56 x 2) + (28 x 2) +(98 x 2)
= 364

For area of a flat object, it would just be length times width. While not the simplest way to do this, the easiest to understand is getting the area of each side and adding them up. Since opposite sides on a rectangular prism are the same, we really only need to figure out three sides; add them up and double it.
2[(A*B) + (A*C) + (B*C)]=Surface area
2[(4*14) + (4*7) + (14*7)]=Surface area
2[56 + 28 + 98]=Surface area
2[182]= Surface are
Surface Area = 364
