Opinions on others who correct people's grammar over the internet?
I believe supposed "grammar Nazis" are just second level attention seekers. The first level being a pretty girl on Facebook posting a nice picture, yet in the description writing "I'm fat" in order to make others tell her she is not. Grammar Nazis look to "educate" the people who "cannot spell" on the internet but I believe they are just seeking attention and a fight from others who don't care about spelling to fulfill a supposed "attention seeking" part of the brain. What are your opinions on these people?
Thanks to everyone for your opinions!!

I agree. My sister is like this and she is definitely an attention seeker. I usually ignore them when they correct me so they don't get what they are after. Attention.

It's the internet. People want to feel as if they're superior and attacking people they don't know via. correcting their grammar. They are attention seekers and I don't give them the satisfactory. But, let's be honest, wouldn't it be nicer if people cared about how they wrote? People are careless these days.

I suppose I *am* one of those people.

I don't correct people's grammar in order to get attention, however - I correct their grammar because $hitty use of the English language is a pet peeve.

truth be told - I am the exact opposite of an attention wh0re. I could see some grammar Nazis getting their jollies out of being *right*, out of telling themselves how much smarter they are than their victims, but. . . yeah, I'm not really into that, either.

I just can't f*cking stand when I see the wrong form of "your" being used - it means YOU'RE either dumb, or lazy, or both. Shrug. If that makes someone pay attention to me, I could not care less.

there is a big difference between a typo or two and someone so lacking in basic english that you cant even tell what they are trying to say

I agree with willie mammoth. For instance, I have created the different levels of grammar nazis (from best to worst)
1. Correcting word usage and sentence structures- I actually agree with these guys
2. Bitching about spelling- it's the Internet it's almost a law that u have to spell things rong, take off letters, and add numbers to words. So stop h8ing
3. Capitalization and punctuation- no one cares if they put the apostrophe in the wrong place or doesn't end every sentence with a (.?!) and no one cares about starting every sentence with a capital letter. And no one cares about the proper use of quotations.
Level 2 and 3 grammar nazis, you know who you are, either get with the times or stay off the Internet.

I'm a grammar nazi too. I ignore obvious typos, but if I see somebody using the same wrong spelling twice, or getting some grammar or punctuation hopelessly wrong, I don't insult them by thinking "God, what an idiot". I think, "How sad that that person had such dreadful and incompetent teachers".

So, to HELP them - because they wouldn't write badly on purpose, right? - I point out how they can fix their mistakes.
If they find it useful, great. If they choose to ignore it, that's their choice. I just can't stand to think that somebody doesn't KNOW they're making bad mistakes and nobody's bothering to help.

What they do with the information is up to them.

not necessarily true. with me, it's a complusion. my mother corrected everything everyone said incorrectly and i have taken up the gauntlet!

i do it less than i used to, but if the grammar is egregious, i will comment. you did a fine job, btw. lol

As long as you get the point across. It's yahoo answers not a bloody thesis. I really could care less about those who try to correct my grammar.

Correcting grammar over the internet seems a little pretensions, but personally I don't think I would mind much. I think it is always good to take things constructively, especially comments which are meant to be constructive.

The delivery of the grammar correction is important. I believe that if somebody says it in a purely constructive manner, with no intention of being snide or pompous, then its fine.
