I would say that people today are less family oriented then they were 50 years ago.

people do not have to stay in loveless even violent marriages as they di 50 years ago. also woman have more Rights, on the down side people spend too much time watching tv, texting and on here than spending quality time with each other, women work now which is good but often the kids are on their own all day with no parent home

I think families are are as close today as they were 50 years ago, in fact in some ways even closer, as Father's take on a bigger role in the upbringing of the children. We may not live next door to one another, or in the same street anymore, and I think this is probably due to having to move to where the work is. Our family all stay some distance from one another, but that doesn't stop us keeping in touch. I am a 55 year old widow with 3 beautiful Daughters and their Husbands who have given me 6 precious Grandchildren between them, from 12 years old down to 3. We talk on the phone every day,we also 'talk' regularly on Facebook and e-mails. When we eat, we always sit at the table together, and have a good old blether and a laugh. I lost my Dad in November, just days after his 85th birthday, but I spoke to him most days of my life, whenever possible, and I manage to speak to my Mum and Sister most days. I have so many cousins, I don't think I could count them, we used to play together all the time as children, then of course grew up, got married had families of our own, and moved away. With social network site's such as Facebook, most of us are in touch again, and even after all these years, are still as close and love each other dearly. So in answer to your question, I think families are still as close, or closer than they were 50 years ago. Sorry for the long winded reply, but I wanted to give you as much information as possible.
Hope this is of some help. Regards, Carol xxx
