How do some people have so many friends on Facebook?

I'm 17 and I've seen people my age with like 900+ friends on their Facebook. I know it sounds dumb, but how do they have that many? Do they add alot of random people?

I don't get it either. Many people just add people to have as high a number as they can.

I have a lot of friends on fb who I'm not very close to, but I know who they are because I went to school with them or met them at a summer camp. I wouldn't call it adding random people, but an fb friends is very different from a friend in real life. People tend to add someone if they've met even only once (or if they only know of the other person), which could explain the high numbers.
