Would you like your 11 year old daughter on FaceBook?
When i was at the mall, In the food court. I heard this little girl putting up a huge fight about being on facebook. The mother said that no,cuz girls your age gossip about friends and it only cause drama?

Do you think that's true?

I do. I think facebook is not a wise idea for "some young " children.

There's a reason their is an age restriction on young children (under 13 I believe) on facebook.

My reasoning... there is too much trouble on there that kids don't realize they are getting into. When we were kids, it was chatrooms and stalkers on them. Now its kids posting or viewing inappropriate content that will follow them around forever. How about some dumb comment you made when you were 10 being permanently inscribed on facebook for your employers to see one day... not cool.

If I had an 11 year old, I would make them a Facebook account....but I would be the one with the password. Until they are in high school. I agree that the internet isn't the best place for a child to be sharing personal information.

If I did they would not be putting their real picture on there until they reached fourteen, and their profiles would be set to private and i would monitor their contact with friends. This would protect them from any potential internet creeps.
But I'm not sure, I think I'm going to encourage my children to network themselves physically instead of relying on so much technology. It makes them more outgoing and independant...but that's just me. I think that a lot of the social sites are too overrated. It creates a barrier between people. But it can be used as good, as it allows friends to keep in touch with one another and to spread news or be creative.

I think we live in a time where technology is for everyone, the real question is about unsupervised use of that technology.

There is shades of gray in this area, personally I think i would allow my child to use facebook only because I would have installed a key-logger and a program allowing me to see what activity they would do on the computer.

My job as a parent would not be to respect the private life of the child but to always know what's going on in it's life to be able to give support, and at the opposite of when they talk in person, Facebook is easier to intercept.

So basically its as dangerous to let a child using Facebook unsupervised as letting it watch TV alone. it's the presence of an adult that makes it safe.

I've had facebook since I was 9. The majority of these comments are unfair because none of them actually understand what its like to be that age and having facebook. When I was 9, I was completely aware of the issues of social networking, chatrooms etc. Its really not hard to be safe on the internet, all you have to do is put non revealing pictures up or something like a picture of what you like. And also all you have to do is decline friend requests from strangers? Its not much of a big deal of an a 11 year old having facebook.
