How to ask out a girl I hardly ever see?

So there's this girl I like at school. She's a year younger than me and we aren't in any of the same classes. I rarely see her and there usually isn't an opportunity to strike up a conversation, we've talked before in the past and got along well, but we really aren't friends.
How should I go about getting closer to this girl and hopefully asking her out? Is it okay to chat with her on facebook and maybe ask for her number if I hardly ever see her at school?

Try to start conversing with her and be friends with her for a while and then i suggest asking her out

Talk to her. Get to know her. Start with saying Hi, and go from there. Any chance at all you must talk to her and make eye contact. Soon you will dating her. Take it slow. You need to talk to her, don't forget to compliment her.
