Everyone I know uses their real name. Isn't that the point??
My older brother is really giving me a hard time about this. He's concerned with hacking, stalking, etc.
I'm just confused about how this can actually be dangerous if you only add your friends.
He said just having your picture with your name causes enough damage.
How?

just be careful what you put on it. when you apply for college and jobs they look you up on facebook/myspace to see what content you post. i suppose if someone was really creepy they could learn your name, look at pictures to see what you look like, who your friends are, and find you address based on your name. i guess its all about being careful.

VERY dangerous.
You should NEVER give out your real name, age or personal details online. Other wise you invite people to stalk you or attack you or come round to your house and steal your stuff.

If you use your real name there is no going back!

Once on the Internet your name is then set in stone. It doesn't matter if you are only on Facebook or whatever - the search engines will find you.

It may be ok now, but sometime in the future you may regret it. I draw a parallel with tattoos on this - except that you can't have surgery to remove your name from the search engine archives.

Facebook isn't terribly dangerous if you know what you're doing. Under Privacy, you can set your profile so that only your friends - not just everyone in your network - can view it. Then only add people you know in person. That helps a lot with filtering out creeps. Of course, there are always risks - it's just a matter of what information you keep open to the public.

You can also change your last name to your last initial (they say it's not allowed any more, but there are ways around it if you're creative enough Wink).

Well, the thing about Facebook is that no one can really see your profile unless you let them... That is, if they're in your network or you know them. Really, just don't add anyone who requests to be your friend like Myspace. Make sure you know the person... Perhaps they go to your school or something. And if you're really worried about pictures, have a picture of yourself, but maybe with more than one of your friends. Facebook is fun and weird. I love it!

Most of the people here saying that you are going to be killed and raped are just paranoid. So long as you are careful- you should be fine. If you're 13 and a 54 year old guy is hitting on you it might be best to ignore him. Don't add people to your friends you don't know, and you should be generally alright.
