You can upload any photo as your avatar or you can use the one from Facebook or Twitter.

Yahoo is currently making changes. It is not clear what the final results will be. They have removed the option to update the avatar directly from Yahoo Answers. If you go to Yahoo Avatars and click export to Yahoo it refers to Pulse. The photos displayed can be different from the photos displayed at the Yahoo Profile. The Yahoo Profile does not show the cartoon avatar. The only thing you can currently do for sure is upload and use your own photo.

STEP 1.
Your profile is currently not hidden.
In order for your avatar to appear you must make your Yahoo Profile visible. That is done here:
http://profile.yahoo.com/y/settings/privacy/
There is no reason to hide your profile. Nothing appears unless you enter it and turn a switch on. The name can be anything you want.

STEP 2.
If you want to use your Facebook or Twitter avatar be sure to link the sites in the Profile options.
http://profile.yahoo.com/y/settings/linked-accounts/

STEP 3.
To create a cartoon avatar first go to http://avatars.yahoo.com and create one.
[The only way to currently use this is to export, edit, and then upload as in step 4.]

STEP 4.
Go to your Yahoo Profile at http://profile.yahoo.com
Click on your avatar.
Upload one or choose an existing one.
The same avatar is used throughout Yahoo.
[The cartoon avatar from step 3 is not appearing as a choice. It may be a glitch or maybe it is being eliminated.]

Just answered a similar question where the user has absolutely nothing at all. Not even the frame so it has to be a glitch due to the work they are doing. Edit your pic has just appeared at your question but not o your profile.

Whenever I see an "X" in the space where a photo should be I think it usually has to do with the flash player not being installed or sol old that it's obsolete.

If you haven't added a flash player to your system yet, you'll need one in order to view and make photos and videos as well as for other important functions.

This is really one of those non-debatable issues, a flash player is an ABSOLUTE necessity as I'm sure anyone will tell you.

This link will take you to Adobe, one of the most reliable and most used flashes of all time and by the way, if you don't have a Reader, you'll need one of those two in order to read documents and other things. This too, is an absolute necessity and something you can download from this site.
