it's a lot easier to use these sites than to call or visit a relative as it takes out the travel, awkwardness (from some families) and the all round effort. Facebook tells you when your family member or friend is having a birthday, what they're doing, where they are, how they feel, it's a lot easier to just send them a quick few messages or talk to them on IM than to call them or drive to their house for a visit

If you are asking, my opinion is that people are very comfortable behind the shield of their phone and computer. Technology can create an illusion of who we want to be instead of who we really are, and because of that, it is very addictive. Personally, I find it to be unhealthy, and I think people should call each other and meet up regularly to stay in touch. Facebook is no better than the cheesy newsletter that people send out with their Christmas Cards. They may mention a tough time or two, but essentially, it is a way to show off our accomplishments and to publish our actions. Everyone wants to be published/documented, and to matter, so with these types of forums, we can all have that opportunity. I admit, I am an avid FB user, but I don't own a cell phone, and I call my friends and family when I want to talk, unfortunately, most of the time, I get their voice mail and I rarely get a call back. It is strange how technology has broadened our tolerance and understanding of each other globally while simultaneously hindered our intimate relationships.
