How to disable like notifications on Facebook?

When I like things like a photo or a status on Facebook, it posts a notification on my friends "Home" screens, like "Earl likes a photo" and a copy of the photo (if the photo is public or among mutual friends). How can I disable these types of notifications so when I like something people on my friends list won't be notified about it?

the only thing that prevents it is adding each person to your restricted list, which also prevents them from seeing your status updates
