My son wants to join there to hang with his friends, but doesn't want his dad and other relatives to see whatever he does on there.

yeah. just go to "settings" - "privacy settings" and if you look at "able to view wall" settings or whatever you can add people who you don't want to be able to view your wall/ pictures/ etc

If to don't want them to see your page, why would you except them as a friend? I guess everyone has their on type of friends.
