How can I make my account invisible on facebook or close it without losing friends?

I want to temporarily go offline from facebook so no-one can see me (including friends) but I don't want to disconnect from friends/groups that I am in if I decide to come back online.

How is this done?

If you don't want to chat with your friends you can go offline while you are still playing.Here's how it is done:
Go to chat->click on 'Options'->click on 'Go Offline'->then you can be offline when you are online and nobody knows that you are online.

The first answer provided is one way. The only other way I know of is to go into your privacy settings and where you can set all the items in your account to be viewed by only friends, you can also set things to be only viewed by a customized number of people. Maybe you could go into all of your settings and set them to only one friend (that you know never goes on Facebook either?) and restrict anyone from seeing anything. Then if and when you change your mind and want to be active again, you just go back and change all the privacy settings.
