How do I find my long lost relatives in Sweden?

It seems that every family tree and heritage site wants money and only works if your family members have made an account of their own.

How exactly would I be able to trace my relatives in Sweden? I must have a ton of them because my grandfather moved here to America when he was 19 and had 9 brothers and 9 sisters on a farm.

I too have Swedish relatives so I understand your frustration. First, Family Search as many free Swedish records available as well as a good training class on searching for Scandinavian ancestors. Check CyndisList also. THere are a number of good free sites, especially DDSS if they lived in Southern Sweden. I also found the Weboards for Sweden on GenForum, WebRoots and Ancestry to be very helpful.

Just for the heck of it, try Facebook. The siblings of your grandfather probably have many grandchildren who would be your second cousins. Many Swedes can speak English, so you may run into some of your cousins.

If you like, you can post your grandfather's name here and someone can look for Swedish family trees with his family.

My daughter looked in Facebook for Norwegians with her first and last name and found nine, all male!

I have run into cousins here in the States who share my Swedish heritage, but none in Sweden yet.
