To send a Direct Message, you have to be following someone and to have them follow you too. There are two ways you can send one:

1. Visit the profile of the person you want to send a DM to. Under their username is a bar and on the end of the bar is a picture of a cog. Clicking that will bring up a list of options, and one of the options is to send a Direct Message to that user. Click it, type up your message, and press Send.

2. This option is also the way to check your DMs. When logged in to Twitter, go to your homepage. Along the right-hand sidebar is a Search box, and above that are a few links. One of them is "Direct Messages", followed by the number of DMs in your inbox. Click on it and it will take you to your inbox, along with a space to write your DM and choose who you want to send it to. Type it up, choose your receiver, and click send.
