why is twitter so popular?

i am always hearing about twitter on tv in stuff, but i am wondering why? i mean i have a twitter account and all it is is facebook with out the chat the email wall to wall talking, or is there something else i don't know about which makes it popular?

Twitter is 1/100 the size of facebook. It is gaining ground though-- it's something new and social networking sites are exciting! As an alternative to facebook or myspace, people are always going to look for something new.

Not sure, I guess because it's new and started out with celebrities using it mostly. But I think updating your "status" every hour is a little too much information and is just ways to start drama or say things to make ex girlfriends and boyfriends jealous, etc. Gah technology is taking privacy and humbleness out of our lives.
