Can you make previous tweets on twitter private ? ?

Okay. So my twitter profile is private. But I would like to make it public and start having my friends follow me. I usually put personal stuff and feelings on twitter, that's why it's private. I have almost 9,000 tweets, so I can't just delete them, it would be a pain. I want to know if there is a way to make all of my previous tweets private without deleting them, or making a whole new twitter. I appreciate all the help . Thank you.

Once you put your account on private, your already written tweets will soon be private, It'll take awhile before all of your tweets become private.
